The 8th Beijing International Scholars Exchange Platform was recently held at the China National Archives of Publications and Culture (Central Repository). Over 50 international scholars from Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Beijing International Studies University participated in this immersive exploration of Chinese civilization.
This event also serves as the 7th Cultural Exchange Day of China National Archives of Publications and Culture, which aims to foster exchange between traditional Chinese culture and other world civilizations, bridging cultural gaps and deepening global recognition of China’s cultural heritage. Dr. Xu Zhongyu, Deputy Director of the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, welcomed visiting scholars and introduced them to the Archives' founding vision and cultural mission.

International scholars were then guided through exhibitions, including Chinese Ancient Civilization Through Cultural Artifacts Exhibition and Techniques of Reproduction and Conservation. Through ancient publications, manuscripts, and artifacts, scholars gained a deeper understanding of China’s political, economic, philosophical, literary, scientific, and artistic achievements spanning millennia of continuous civilization. The exhibitions also showcased the evolution of book forms, traditional production techniques, and delicate restoration methods, which Professor Yitwah Cheung from the Department of Mathematical Sciences described as truly eye-opening.

The tour was followed by an interactive cultural session. Under professional guidance, scholars engaged in hands-on experiences of ancient book restoration, woodblock printing, and Chinese calligraphy. International scholars learned to write “中华文脉” (The Thread of Chinese Civilization) using traditional brush techniques; during the activity, Professor Sinkinesh Atale Gebre from Beijing Foreign Studies University, originally from Ethiopia, pointed out the resemblance between the Chinese character “中” (zhōng) and a letter in her native script. She gladly demonstrated this remarkable parallel with a brush, even writing the word for “calligraphy” in Ethiopian script. Participants agreed that the event offered them fresh perspectives and memorable insights into the profound depth of Chinese civilization.
